Beginning in the fall of 2010 and continuing throughout the university's 50th anniversary year, the history and future development of UC San Diego's built environment was explored and celebrated in UCSD by Design: Art, Architecture, and Urbanism in the Campus Context.

University of California, San Diego Campus Guide by Dirk Sutro is the latest addition to a series of campus guides from Princeton Architectural Press.  The book is organized around ten map-guided tours, and presents a history of the growth of the campus and of its architectural landmarks.  This beautifully photographed guide reveals the stories behind the architecture, landscapes, and sculptural works of UCSD's contemporary built environment.  Now on sale at the UCSD Bookstore http://bookstore.ucsd.edu. Included in the price of purchase is admission to the 50th Anniversary tour. Receipt-holders may bring one guest. Prior to the tours, there will be a complimentary continental breakfast at the Ida and Cecil Green Faculty Club. Proof of purchase and advanced registration is required to participate. To register, please visit www.50th.ucsd.edu/tour.

The Stuart Collection is a assemblage of site-specific sculptural works by prominent artists that have been commissioned on the UCSD campus since 1983. The integration of the works in the Collection into the campus landscape and built environment distinguish it from traditional sculpture gardens and normative forms of public art. In celebration of UCSD's 50 anniversary, a series of video podcasts has been created about these renowned works of art. The videos are narrated by Director Mary Beebe and Project Manager Mathieu Gregoire. Please visit http://ucsd.tv/stuartcollection.

The centerpiece of UCSD by Design is a public lecture and moderated discussion series consisting of five events.  Each event includes an evening lecture by a keynote speaker at the Museum of Contemporary Art San Diego's Sherwood Auditorium in La Jolla, followed the next morning by a moderated discussion at the UCSD campus.  At the moderated discussions, each keynote speaker was joined, appropriate to the topic, by invited architects, architectural historians, landscape architects, art historians, Stuart Collection artists, urban planners, campus planners, and academics in related disciplines.
